there's been quite a lot written about the superiority of wave files vs. mp3. there exists a certain collective wisdom bandied about in regard to how great waves are and how terrible mp3s are. here are some things to consider about this comparison.
it's really cool the way you can find these demo versions of some classic old albums. like if you hear marc bolan's acoustic versions of electric warrior. it's interesting to me the concept of negative space in music. my point is that ofttimes you can sort of hear the orchestration in a solo performers head as they play. and that part of the music is shared within your imagination and theirs, at the precise moment. that's pretty magical. through the years i've studied lots of solo performers, and the best ones, seems like to me, you can sort of hear a whole orchestra playing behind them.
here are some free suggestions for engaging in this type of behavior successfully. i have spent a fair amount of years working and logging miles as a sideman, and likely will do so again at various points. i wanted to give you some ways to perhaps operate more smoothly within this role. what follows are some hard earned/learned lessons for your consideration.
the other day i did a little test. while researching some new music, i stumbled across a wide array of little labels that were doing cassettes only. i got to digging around within that. whoa, there is some really cool stuff being done within that realm. and also being a person that likes black, round records, i went on the net and researched some new vinyl records that were being released. not re-issues of older stuff but currently made music. guess what?
What will you remember most about 2010?
a. results are produced indirectly.
b. if you think you know the answer, you've just discarded at least half of the answer.
c. things only exist in their particulars.
d. observing things causes them to become. or rather to cease becoming.
e. time doesn't exist.
f. there is a universal set of all extant knowledge {ideas}. symbolized by e.
g. the seen proceeds from the unseen. there is another world, or other worlds, behind the world we see.
h. proof is weaker than matter-of-fact.
so anyways i got really excited about this. for the last couple of years i have been reading books about set theory, and number theory. to me, these ideas serve a very useful function of modeling events and movements in the real world.
i've been so jazzed about all this stuff. it's been building and building for the last few years and now things are so happening right now, let's take a look at a few points that make me leap out of bed with excitement about how killer this whole deal is.
